Poople | How to Play the Daily Word Ladder Game

I've been doing Poople every morning for a while now and the thing that finally made it click for me is that it's less about vocabulary than it is about patience, honestly. Every day you and everyone else get the same four letter starting word, and your only job is to turn it into POOP by changing one letter at a time, and every single word along the way has to be a real word. The fewer steps you take, the better you did, and the shortest possible route is called par. That's it. The whole game is figuring out the shortest ladder without wasting moves on dead ends.

The core idea in one line: change one letter at a time, stay on real words, and land on POOP in as few steps as possible. Match par and you've beaten the day.

How a round actually works

One starting word a day, the exact same word for every single player in the world, no luck of the draw at all. You change one letter to make a new four letter word, and that new word has to be a real word, and it has to be exactly one letter different from the one before it. Then you keep going until you hit POOP. Here's the part that trips people up: you can't just swap any letters you feel like, because every intermediate step has to be a real dictionary word, so a clever shortcut only works if all the in between words actually exist.

What par actually means

Par is the shortest possible path from the starting word to POOP, and it's the same for everyone on a given day. It's computed by a full graph search across all the valid four letter words, so it's a hard number, not a guess. Finishing in par is the best result, and every extra step you take above par gets counted against your score. Most days par is around four to six moves, but the hardest starting words can stretch out to eleven, which is a genuinely rough morning. There's a whole page on this in the scoring guide if you want the details.

Every way to play

The daily puzzle is only one lane. Poople also has Unlimited, a free practice mode that drops the one-per-day limit and gives you random puzzles whenever you want. If you're stuck mid ladder, the solver can find the shortest path from whatever word you're sitting on. And if you want to see what past days looked like, the archive has every closed puzzle with its verified solution.

Frequently asked questions

Is Poople free?

Totally free. You play the daily puzzle in your browser at poople.io and you don't even need an account. Your streak and stats are saved locally in your own browser, so there's nothing to sign up for and nothing to download.

What is a word ladder?

A word ladder is a puzzle where you turn one word into another by changing a single letter at each step and keeping a valid word every time. The idea goes back to Lewis Carroll, who called it Doublets in 1877. Poople is a daily word ladder where the target word is always POOP.

How is Poople different from Wordle?

Wordle asks you to guess one hidden word, while Poople is a word ladder where you change one letter at a time. In Poople the target word is always POOP, which gives the game its theme and its name. If you know Weaver, Poople is basically that but with a funnier destination.

Can I play Poople more than once a day?

The daily puzzle is once a day so everyone solves the same one. If you want more, Poople Unlimited gives you random ladders to practice on whenever you like, and the archive has every past puzzle to review.

When does the daily puzzle reset?

A new puzzle goes live every day at 08:00 UTC, and everyone in the world gets the same starting word that day. Missed one? Every past puzzle is still browsable in the archive.
